Kaupapa Maori

At Whariki we strive to expand our ideas about knowledge and research, developing a range of approaches and challenges to theory, methodologies and methods.

Transforming Science

In a bid to struggle for the survival of Maori taonga we often see Maori knowledge as only that which existed largely before colonisation. We deny and are denied ownership of knowledge that has been a part of our experience in more recent times. The dilemma about western versus indigenous might not be a dilemma if power imbalances and domination were not present – if both Maori and non-Maori knowledge and world views were valued, and we had full ownership and protection of taonga as guaranteed by Te Tiriti o Waitangi. We have developed a range of approaches to research and evaluation. These include Hikoi, and A Wairua Approach to Research.
