Youth Photovoice Research in Clendon
and Mangere
The Youth Development Strategy Aotearoa encourages good quality
research upon
which to build meaningful programmes within the policy framework.
The photovoice project invited young people in two south Auckland
communities to participate in and contribute to the design,
data collection, analysis and presentation of research into
youth issues in their neighbourhoods. Photovoice is an innovative
approach to social science research that combines photographic
images and participants’ explanations to document social
issues. At Clendon and Mangere, during 2006, the research
team from Whariki Research Group worked with groups of young
people to gather images, articulate their significance and
create powerpoint presentations for use with community and
policy audiences.
