The Midlands Community Action Project: Reducing Alcohol Related Harm Among Young People (2000-2008)

Following the lowering of the drinking age to 18, SHORE were contracted by the Ministry of Health (formally Midlands HFA)  to provide formative and process/impact evaluation for a community action pilot project undertaken in two rural areas (Waikato and Taranaki). This project involves working with local community project coordinators to monitor age verification practices in on- and off- licensed liquor outlets, developing locally appropriate harm reduction strategies, and using the evaluation information to inform and support the project process. To date this project has clearly resulted in more strategic health promotion and enforcement activities and much improved media coverage of alcohol issues.  Furthermore the capacity of the workforce in these areas has grown through the ongoing workforce development approach which is integrated into the project framework.

From July 2006 SHORE and Wharaki have a stronger workforce development role and will be supporting each provider to work strategically and build their internal evaluation capacity.
