Alcogenic environments: effects of alcohol access on youth alcohol-related harm (2003-2005)

This study examines the relationship between local environments (physical, socio-economic and social) and drinking, and alcohol-related harm among youth (aged 12-19 years). The first component investigates variations in alcohol access for young people in the Auckland region and how these variations are patterned by socio-economic status. Alcohol access indicators will include alcohol availability; locality-based alcohol supply; and social supply of alcohol to young people. The second component examines the relationship between the different measures of alcohol access within Auckland and drinking and alcohol-related harm among young people assessed from survey and police data. The research findings will inform the development of alcohol policy and enforcement interventions that may be effective in reducing alcohol-related harm.
